I've been a special education researcher for 8 years. I am originally from Cranston, Rhode Island. After graduating high school, I joined the Air Force where I was an Avionics Technician on C-130 aircraft and met my husband more than 35 years ago as we marched to school one morning. We have lived in Arizona, Colorado, West Virginia, Ohio, Las Vegas, and now San Antonio. We have four adult children.
I worked for Clark County School District in Las Vegas for 7 years (Durango High School, Canarelli Middle School, and Desert Oasis High School). I have 5 years experience as a special education teacher at the secondary school level, and completed a 3-year fellowship at an elementary school working with students at-risk and with disabilities in an urban setting alongside the 2021 National Teacher of the Year, Juliana Urtubey.
I am a lifelong learner, but not easily. I was a B/C student who hated to read when I was a kid - I grew up thinking I wasn't all that smart. However, as an adult I've had much more success with education. I graduated from Pike's Peak Community College in 1991. Then, I attended night classes at Wright-Patterson AFB through Park University to earn my Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources/Management - so my BS degree was a 14-year endeavor. I earned my Master's degree in Special Education in 2011, and my Doctorate degree in 2018, both from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I hold Advanced Studies Certificates in Teacher Leadership and in Online Teaching from Southern Utah University. The main focus of my research is students with learning disabilities (LD). I'm particularly interested in English learners with LD, improving expository paragraph writing skills, the implementation and integration of technology, special education teacher retention, and service animals in schools.
In my spare time I love to hang out with my family & friends, fly, learn new things, and ride my bicycle. My favorite place to be is at the beach, with a close second being at an airport. If you would like any more information, please email me at [email protected]. I am a quintessential chatty Kathy :)
